Williamson Park, Lancaster

Williamson Park is set high above Lancaster, home to the iconic Ashton memorial and 54 acres of beautiful parkland and woodlands. There are stunning views of the city, Morecambe bay and the Lake District. Please note some of the woodland paths are not suitable for pushchairs but there are plenty of paths that are.

As well as walking there are fantastic play areas for under and over 8s, a butterfly house and a mini zoo. A fantastic day out for all the family.

Brockholes nature reserve, Preston

Brockholes is a stunning nature reserve managed by The Wildlife Trust with an amazing floating visitors centre. It is located just off the M6 so it’s easy to get there. The majority of paths are level and surfaced so perfect for pushchairs. Dogs however are not permitted. There is also a lovely play area and also a den building area that kids love. The walks are alongside the River Ribble, around lakes and through meadows and woodlands.

Beacon fell country park

Beacon fell country park in the forest of Bowland is a great place for a family walk. There are plenty of walks within the country park that are suitable for prams but it is a fell so it is up and downhill. The paths are pushchair friendly though.

You can walk to the summit relatively easily where you’ll get fantastic views and enjoy a woodland walk too. We love all the sculptures dotted around the country park.

There is a visitors centre with maps of the trails and toilet facilities and a picnic area. There is a small playground in the woods but think balance beams not swings and slides.

Lytham St Annes and Lytham

We love visiting Lytham St Annes with our kids. It’s a lovely seaside town to visit. The walk along the front all the way from Lytham St Annes to Lytham is lovely to do with a pram. You don’t need to do the whole way though, you can pick a choose where to walk and how far to walk before turning back.

You could also walk around either of the two parks below which have lovely play areas.

In the centre of Lytham St Annes, you will find Ashton gardens which have a really good adventure playground as well as gardens to wander around with a pram.

There are Lowther gardens at Lytham end which is smaller but has lovely gardens and a nice play area for younger children. We usually find it quieter too. We like to walk from here to the lighthouse.

You could also walk to Park view 4u, Lytham if you’re looking for a good play area.

Fairhaven Lake

Fairhaven Lake is a great circular walk in Lytham St Annes. There is a car park at both ends of the lake and a visitor centre, run by the RSPB in the centre on the side nearest the road.

It’s a 1 mile, easy walk around the lake. There are 2 play areas for different age children, a very cool crazy golf course and a cafe. There is also a water sports centre and boat hire.

There is also a free historic hedge maze and 9 holes crazy golf (small fee) if you have older children with you. There is a cafe, gift shop and large play area too. The paths are really pram-friendly, even in the woodland areas.

The Guild Wheel, Preston

The Guild Wheel is a 21 mile walking and cycling route that encircles Preston. You can join the route at various points and enjoy as much or as little as you like of this path which is perfect for those with prams. It passes through ancient woodland, city parkland, Brockholes nature reserve and Preston docks. It includes riverside and canalside walks.

Pennington flash local nature reserve

Pennington flash in south Lancashire is a fantastic place. The paths are flat and pushchair-friendly. Ignore the bridge in the photo below, this takes you out of the nature reserve and is not part of the network of paths that are suitable for your pram.

By the main car park there is a relatively new visitors centre with cafe and toilet facilities. A little further around the path and you will find the amazing adventure playground with loads of fantastic equipment for children of all ages. There is plenty for toddlers to enjoy.

Martin mere wetlands

This is another great walk for young children and a great day out for families. It isn’t a free walk but you can become a member for frequent visits.

It’s far more than a place to walk with loads of birds including flamingos! There is of course a duck pond (well several small ones really and some pretty big ones and marshland). There are several peaceful water side bird hides (kids are welcome in them).

There are also two play areas, a visitor centre and a welly walk area (less pram-friendly but it is a small part of the reserve).
