Where is Low Sizergh Barn

Low Sizergh Barn is located just off the A591 near Sizergh in the south Lake District. It’s not far from junction 36 of the M6. It makes a great place to stop on your way in or out of the Lakes. Either to stretch your legs on the farm trail or to pick up some local Cumbrian food from the farm shop or cafe.

The address is – Low Sizergh Barn, Sizergh, Kendal, LA8 8AE

How much does it cost to visit?

There is no charge to visit or complete the farm trail.

What age is Low Sizergh Barn suitable for?

All ages are welcome and catered for at Low Sizergh Barn. The farm trail is just over a mile long (taking the shortest option) so it is great for little legs. I wouldn’t recommend taking a pushchair on the walk though as there are kissing gates and uneven ground. It is a farm after all.

How long do families typically spend at Low Sizergh Barn?

I can’t see you spending more than 1 hour here, 2 if you’re eating in the cafe. As I’ve mentioned, it’s great for stops on longer journeys or you can combine it with a trip to Sizergh Castle. We have walked the short distance between the National Trust castle and Low Sizergh Barn, it’s straightforward and is about 1 mile.

What is there at Low Sizergh Barn apart from the farm trail?

There is a cafe and farm shop on this working dairy farm. You can purchase organic raw milk from a vending machine outside too.

You might also be lucky enough to see the herd of cows being milked.

There is also a small campsite that looks very nice but we’ve not stayed there yet. Book early is my tip as it’s always full when we try.

The farm trail is a little over a mile long. Dogs are welcome but they must be under control. I wouldn’t recommend taking a pushchair on this walk. Also, beware there are some electric fences in some areas but they are a little set back from the path with a rope keeping you away from it. It’s just worth being aware if you have young children or dogs.

The farm trail starts from the main car park at Low Sizergh Barn. There is a red sign for the farm trail and a really cute fairy road sign too.

Cross roads of farm tracks

Follow this path around the edge of the campsite and through the gate with the farm train signposted.

You’ll then come to a smaller pedestrian gate, again with a farm trail sign. This is where the trail starts and it is well signposted along the whole trail. The first part of the trail starts with a fun willow tunnel for kids to run through.

You’ll then continue to follow the signs into the woods. In these woods, you’ll find a number of fairy doors that are very cute. There’s also a bit where you can choose to follow the stepping stones across the shallow stream to a little area with wooden mushroom stools.

Once you are out of these woodlands, follow the signposted route through fields to another campsite and then into another larger woodland.

Here you’ll find 2 options for a longer and shorter walking route. Both routes lead back through the woods and fields until you find yourself back in the car park.
